Diploma D1: Wine Production

Welcome!

Welcome to the WSET online Level 4 Diploma D1 Wine Production. The unit is broken down into weekly modules. There are two online educators to guide you through, one dedicated to guiding you through the theory content and one dedicated to guiding you on your tasting notes. Please see the information below for an outline of this unit.

The unit is based around a six week online programme with a recommendation of between two to three hours study per week to cover the online activities and read the relevant chapters in the textbook. The D1 online unit should take approximately 16 hours in total, excluding your essential reading.

Introduction

D1 is one of the two foundation units that must be studied at the beginning of a Diploma programme. It is important to understand what the vine requires to produce and ripen grapes for wine production and how the growing environment influences the vine’s ability to produce and ripen grapes, grape growing options, winemaking options and how they influence the style, quality and price of wines. Specialist knowledge and understanding of the core principles of wine production is gained through comprehensive study of a large number of wine regions, and practically, by developing your wine tasting skills through the Level 4 in Wines Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT).
